Jessica Ryals

CEO / Owner

Empowering institutions to thrive with clarity and strategy, Jessica is your expert guide through complex financial challenges.

Every institution reaches a point where its mission is bigger than its current resources. Without a clear map for the future or the right expertise on-site, senior leaders often find themselves reacting to financial gaps rather than leading through them.

As the CEO and Owner of CFO Colleague, Jessica serves as a strategic partner to these leaders. Following the retirement of the firm’s founder, she has expanded the firm’s mission to help institutions not only survive but thrive by resourcing their strengths and mapping out sustainable futures.

Jessica is the architect of the firm’s GapSourcing practice, a specialized service for institutions that need high-level expertise without the permanent overhead. Whether she is advising a cabinet on long-term strategy or helping a Controller’s office stabilize, her goal is the same: to provide the clarity and confidence required to move forward.

Before taking the helm as CEO, Jessica’s career was built on solving complex financial puzzles.

At CFO Colleague, she served clients as Controller and Analyst, delivering everything from IRS Form 990s to system-wide remediations for endowments and fixed assets. She co-founded the Administrative Services Assessments that allow institutions to peel back the curtain on non-academic functions and preserve resources for the mission.

At Kenyon College (OH), she automated financial reporting and restructured charts of accounts to simplify complex accounting procedures.

Her background as a business intelligence analyst for NIB Health Funds (NSW, ASX:NHF) and a financial statement auditor for Deloitte (NY) provided a rigorous foundation in high-level accounting.

In 2023, Jessica published The Confident Campus Controller to provide a practical roadmap for one of the most difficult roles in higher education. Learn more about the book.

A graduate of Houghton College (BS) and Trevecca Nazarene University (MBA), Jessica lives in Mount Vernon, OH, with her husband, Jesse, and their four children.
